My dogs names...
Sampson - after Samson & Delilah
Sal Paradise & Dean Moriarty - after the Jack Kerouac & Neal Cassady characters in "On The Road"
Interetingly these names fit. Sal is laid back and just goes with the flow, while Dean is all hyper and always stirring things up. Do you think that I defined their eventual personalities by giving them these names?

Oh yeah, I also have a cat named Spud after Jerry's nickname in Old & In the Way.

I guess you'd have to be the judge of that yourself, because it's been so long since I read that book, I can't remember Sal's personality. I'm sure the names are fitting, though. I like that name Spud. Don't know about you, but I learned that little piece of Jerry trivia from the Grateful Dawg DVD.

Our dog, Ratdog, used to exercise what he thought was his God-given freedom to walk around untethered. The local animal control officer disagreed with him, though, and I feel really bad for him that I have to keep him chained in the back yard. It's like he's in jail, which is precisely where I was taken after forgetting a court appearance for being in violation of the city ordinance that says he ain't allowed to wander away from home. There's a buzzkill for ya'. What brought this to mind, though, is that name Spud. We found out that Ratdog had found at least one other household in my stepdaughter's neighborhood that welcomed him. He's pretty good-natured, generally keeps a smile on his face, and he became a frequent visitor to some folks over there whom we learned had their own name for him: Bubs. Spud just kinda sounded like Bubs to me.

Bubs. That's so weird that our little Ratdog had a whole other identity away from home. We also understand that he used to stroll into some of the bars uptown where he became a bit of regular. I was wondering why his gait was sometimes a little wobbly.

By the way, love that screen name-nothin' left to do but . . .
